I was part of the winning team for the RIBA competition to design a new library and community hub in Thamesmead, South East London— as a centrepiece of Abbey Wood’s regeneration.
Inspired by a swan’s nest, the design symbolises a place of learning, creativity, and growth. The cantilevered upper level is wrapped in a bespoke perforated aluminium façade, featuring 120,000 hand-drawn holes that bring the concept to life. By day, the metal catches the changing light, creating a dynamic, ever-shifting surface. By night, it transforms into a glowing beacon, with light radiating through the perforations like lanterns on the water. Inside, a bed of reeds and nature-inspired graphics create a welcoming atmosphere, seamlessly dividing spaces like the Children’s Library.
My role spanned concept development, façade pattern design, environmental graphics, signage, and competition board design, alongside managing social media updates throughout the project’s five-year journey.
